Twist Class Topic Resources

Please click on the picture link to find a selection of topic resources for our children in Twist Class. 

The resources are a great and fun way to support and supplement your child's learning in school, develop their knowledge of the topic and encourage their love of learning.

As with any internet access adult supervision is necessary when using these resources.

Whilst every effort has been made evaluate these sites for content, St Margaret's Primary School is not responsible for the content of external Internet sites.

 

Our Day

Our timetable may change occasionally according to needs. Our day begins with basic skills, where we learn spelling, punctuation and grammar. Following this we continue our day with whole class guided reading (ERIC).  The children are given the opportunity to respond to a piece of stimulus and ask/answer questions about it.  This maybe in the form of a piece of narrative, poem, information text or video clip.

English and Maths takes place daily in the morning. We use a range of quality texts in our English teaching and follow the National curriculum objectives for our year group.  We begin Maths with our “maths meetings”.  These help us revisit work already covered.  We then continue with our maths lessons working in groups, in pairs or independently.  

Topic including, Science, Geography and History is undertaken in the afternoon along with Religious Education, PE, Art, music and Computing.

Reading

Reading Books: Children are provided with a reading book and Reading Record. Please encourage your child to read a little each night and please sign in their reading record.  READING BOOKS TO BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY PLEASE. Your child will read 1:1 with an adult fortnightly. However, children can change their reading book at other times during the week if needed as we encourage ‘Reading for Pleasure.’  Please keep in the plastic bag we have provided. Further/replacement bags 50p each.   

Library Books: Your child will have a library session each week and can choose a book to read in their own time, please help them to remember to return their book each week.

Maths

Maths is taught daily in Twist class and a mastery approach is used:

The Essence of Maths Teaching for Mastery

  • Maths teaching for mastery rejects the idea that a large proportion of people ‘just can’t do maths’. ? All pupils are encouraged by the belief that by working hard at maths they can succeed. ? Pupils are taught through whole-class interactive teaching, where the focus is on all pupils working together on the same lesson content at the same time, as happens in Shanghai and several other regions that teach maths successfully. This ensures that all can master concepts before moving to the next part of the curriculum sequence, allowing no pupil to be left behind.
  • If a pupil fails to grasp a concept or procedure, this is identified quickly and early intervention ensures the pupil is ready to move forward with the whole class in the next lesson.
  • Lesson design identifies the new mathematics that is to be taught, the key points, the difficult points and a carefully sequenced journey through the learning. In a typical lesson pupils sit facing the teacher and the teacher leads back and forth interaction, including questioning, short tasks, explanation, demonstration, and discussion.
  • Procedural fluency and conceptual understanding are developed in tandem because each supports the development of the other.
  • It is recognised that practice is a vital part of learning, but the practice used is intelligent practice that both reinforces pupils’ procedural fluency and develops their conceptual understanding.
  • Significant time is spent developing deep knowledge of the key ideas that are needed to underpin future learning. The structure and connections within the mathematics are emphasised, so that pupils develop deep learning that can be sustained.
  • Key facts such as multiplication tables and addition facts within 10 are learnt to automaticity to avoid cognitive overload in the working memory and enable pupils to focus on new concepts.

Reading, Spellings and Journals

Children continue to need their reading books in school each day - please encourage them to read on a regular basis at home (at least 3 times a week) and record this in their diary. Spending just a few minutes a day hearing your child read will have a positive impact on their progress in reading.
Spellings will be given out every Monday for a test on the following Monday morning.

PE

Children will commence swimming lessons on Tuesday 10th September in the afternoon. Please ensure that children have the appropriate swimming kit as follows: swimming trunks for boys (no long shorts); swimming costumes (no bikinis) and swimming caps for girls – please ensure that girls’ hair is tied up/plaited. Also please ensure that children do not wear earrings for swimming as staff are unable to remove these for children and children will not be allowed to enter the pool wearing earrings. PE lessons will be on Thursdays, for which children will need their full PE kit each week in line with school uniform guidelines.
