50 Fantastic Ideas to try at Home
See this link for a collection of practical activities and ideas to try at home with your child.
In Nursery we start our day the minute the children enter school. The children complete a self-registration activity and are then free to choose from a wide range of activities within the classroom. During this time the adults may have specific activities for the children to share and explore.
Once the children are in and settled we start the session by engaging in “Squiggle whilst you wiggle” or ‘dough disco’. This is a wonderful way to get the children ready to learn and to develop their fine and gross motor skills.
During the session, children enjoy having time exploring our wonderful areas of provision. We have lots to discover, including our lovely home corner, storytelling den, creative station, small world and lots more. There is always something new to discover, especially in our investigation, maths and writing areas.
Outdoor learning provides children with the opportunity to investigate, explore, problem solve, use their imagination and creative skills on a larger scale than is possible inside. Therefore we ensure children have the opportunity to explore within outdoor provision on a daily basis. In the outdoor environment we love to explore in our ‘minibeast’ garden, sand, water, construction and small world – just to name a few.
We pride ourselves on encouraging children to be independent and confident within the environment and to engage in their play with their peers and adults alike.
We also have ‘Maths Blast’ time where we actively explore number and shape, space and measures. In school we use ‘Ten town’ to support the teaching of number. The children love to engage with the characters and stories available. Parents can access information about Ten town at www.tentown.co.uk.
The children also receive a daily phonic session. Good quality teaching of Phonics is essential to help your child develop their reading and writing skills.
We love to listen to stories and sing songs. Stories and songs are a great way to develop language and listening skills.
Things to Remember
Reading is an essential part of the EYFS curriculum. Please read with your child at home as this helps to develop their creative language and imagination. This can be through a free trip to the library or any books you have at home.
We will be exploring a different colour/ number each week – please support your child with this at home.
We ask for a voluntary contribution of £1.00 each week. This helps towards providing extra snack for your child, opportunities for baking and to follow the children’s interests. This can also be paid on a half termly basis.
Please ensure that all items of clothing are labelled with your child’s name.
Children will be provided with outdoor play coats. On wet days, children are welcome to bring wellies.
If your child is in the early stages of toilet training, please ensure they bring spare clothing / underwear.
We use a combination of two phonics schemes, Phonics Play and Letters and Sounds. For more information and guidance about how phonics is taught in our school please click on the picture link.
